Screen Printed Pillows

This pillow is handprinted on hemp canvas in charcoal ink. The fabric is rustic but with a soft and interesting texture. Print is on front of pillow.

The design features a sperm whale and a quote from Herman Melville's classic book, Moby Dick. The quote reads as follows:

~ Forehead to forehead I meet thee, this third time, Moby Dick! On deck there!- brace sharper up; crowd her into the wind's eye. He's too far off to lower yet, Mr. Starbuck. The sails shake! Stand over that helmsman with a top-maul! So, so; he travels fast, and I must down. But let me have one more good round look aloft here at the sea; there's time for that. An old, old sight, and yet somehow so young; aye, and not changed a wink since I first saw it, a boy, from the sand-hills of Nantucket! The same- the same!- the same to Noah as to me. There's a soft shower to leeward. Such lovely leewardings! They must lead somewhere ~

The paper nautilus, Argonauta, is a beautiful pelagic octopus. My design is printed in sky blue ink on white linen. Print is on front only.

A long time favorite, my Nest pillow is handprinted with cornflower blue ink on linen. For many it symbolizes family, especially on the birth of their first child, and it's a popular baby shower gift.

Seaweed No.3 is hand printed on natural, peached cotton drill, which has an ultra-soft, brushed finish. Print is on front only. The design was created from a piece of seaweed that I found on Narragansett beach and I use a technique of splattering different colors of ink on the screen. Pulling the print creates infinite blends of colors and no two come out exactly the same. This one is aqua, with blues and greens.

Skate egg cases are commonly called mermaid purses and inspired one of my favorite prints. I love the odd and graphic shape of this unusual egg. If you ever get the chance, the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut has an incredible exhibit where the live casings are backlit and in various stages of development.
